Arrancan los primeros proyectos piloto de hidrógeno de bajas emisiones en Colombia

Ecopetrol y Promigas lanzarán sendos proyectos. En 2021 el Gobierno hizo el lanzamiento de la Ruta del Hidrógeno, la cual tiene como objetivos lograr la producción de entre 1 y 3 GW electrólisis para hidrógeno verde en el mediano plazo

17 de marzo de 2022.   El presidente de la República, Iván Duque, en compañía del ministro de Minas y Energía, Diego Mesa, inaugurarán este viernes los dos primeros proyectos piloto de hidrógeno de bajas emisiones en Colombia.

En Cartagena se pondrán en marcha el electrolizador de Ecopetrol en Reficar, el cual tiene una potencia de 53,2 kw, y que permitirá probar el potencial uso de agua en los procesos y la estabilidad en la producción de esta tecnología. 

Posteriormente, también se inaugurará el proyecto piloto exploratorio de producción de hidrógeno verde y blending con gas natural en redes de transporte y distribución ubicado en la Estación Heroica de Promigas. 

“En septiembre del año pasado presentamos la hoja de ruta del hidrógeno de cero y bajas emisiones, y tan solo 6 meses después ya estamos poniendo en operación los primeros proyectos piloto del hidrógeno verde en el país. Nuestro objetivo es desarrollar entre 2 y 3 GW de electrólisis para la producción de hidrógeno de cero y bajas emisiones en los próximos 10 años”, dijo el ministro de Minas y Energía, Diego Mesa. 

Se estima que el desarrollo del hidrógeno le permitirá a Colombia la reducción de entre 2,5 y 3 millones de toneladas de CO2 en la próxima década, lo que contribuye al cumplimiento de las metas de la COP21 de alcanzar la carbono neutralidad en 2050. 

Recientemente, el Ministerio de Minas y Energía, junto con el Ministerio de Transporte, firmaron un memorando de entendimiento con el Puerto de Rotterdam para crear un corredor de exportación de hidrógeno bajo en carbono entre Colombia y el Reino de los Países Bajos. 

El acuerdo le permitirá a Colombia avanzar en el estudio de la generación de hidrógeno, así como aprender de las experiencias del puerto sobre la logística de transporte del mismo con el fin de comercializarlo. 

Tipos de hidrógeno

Por ser uno de los elementos más reactivos de la tabla periódica, el hidrógeno no se encuentra libre en la naturaleza, sino combinado con otras moléculas. Para su extracción, se requiere un proceso de separación. Dependiendo de este, se pueden obtener distintos tipos de hidrógeno: 

Hidrógeno gris: Es aquel que se obtiene a partir de combustibles fósiles, como el gas natural y el carbón. 

Hidrógeno azul: Es el que se obtiene también a partir de combustibles fósiles, pero sin liberación de dióxido de carbono (CO2). 

Hidrógeno verde: Aquel que se obtiene de fuentes no convencionales de energía renovable, como la biomasa, la energía eólica, la solar y el calor geotérmico, entre otras. 

Los tres tipos de hidrógeno se diferencian entre sí por su origen, pero no por sus usos, pues tienen el potencial de ser utilizados en las mismas aplicaciones. Por provenir de combustibles fósiles, el hidrógeno gris es el que menos contribuye a la descarbonización. En cambio, el hidrógeno verde y el azul son considerados fuentes de energía no convencional y limpia.
