Un consorcio australiano-japonés comenzó a producir hidrógeno usando carbón como parte de un plan piloto en el sur de Australia, valorado en 389 millones de dólares, con miras a exportar hidrógeno licuado al resto del mundo.

15 de marzo de 2021.   El proyecto Cadena de Suministro de Energía de Hidrógeno (HESC, por su sigla en inglés), que se desarrolla en el Valle Latrobe, en el sureño estado de Victoria, busca crear la primera cadena de suministro mundial de hidrógeno licuado para su venta al exterior.

El plan “busca usar lignito (un carbón mineral) con tecnología de captura y almacenamiento de carbono para producir hidrógeno limpio, el cual puede usarse para proveer mucha de la energía que Japón, Australia y el resto del mundo necesitan”, dijo en un comunicado el ministro de Recursos y Agua, Keith Pitt.

El hidrógeno limpio del HESC también contribuirá a reducir las emisiones globales de CO2 en 1,8 millones de toneladas al año (lo que equivale a la emisión de unos 350.000 coches de gasolina), según el portal del proyecto.

El gobierno australiano calcula que un proyecto HESC a escala comercial podría producir hasta 225.000 toneladas de hidrógeno limpio al año con captura y almacenamiento de carbono, así como más de 8.555 millones se dólares de PIB para 2050.

Australia, el mayor exportador del mundo de carbón y considerado uno de los países más contaminantes si se consideran sus ventas al exterior de combustible fósiles, espera que este proyecto ayude a desarrollar mercados más ecológicos para su carbón y gas.

“El proyecto HESC demuestra el valor del enfoque australiano basado en la tecnología para reducir las emisiones y el papel destacado que el hidrógeno podría desempeñar en nuestro futuro”, destacó el ministro de Energía y Reducción de Emisiones, Angus Taylor, en un comunicado.

El proyecto financiado parcialmente por el gobierno federal australiano y el gobierno del estado de Victoria, es coordinado por el consorcio Engineering Australia (HEA), que agrupa a KHI, J-POWER, Iwatani, Marubeni, AGL y Sumitomo.
