En 2020 EE.UU. se mantuvo como el mayor productor de petróleo y gas

En 2020, se produjo más petróleo y gas natural en Estados Unidos que en cualquier otro país (una tendencia que comenzó en 2014), a pesar de las caídas interanuales desde la producción récord en 2019.

21 de julio de 2021.   La producción de petróleo y gas natural de EE.UU. en 2020 totalizó 66,9 billones de unidades térmicas británicas (quads), superando los 45,5 quads de Rusia y los 26,5 quads de producción de petróleo y gas natural de Arabia Saudita.

La producción de petróleo y gas natural cayó en los tres países en 2020 tras una rápida disminución de la demanda durante la pandemia de la Covid-19 y las consiguientes caídas de los precios del petróleo crudo, particularmente en el primer trimestre.

Arabia Saudita y Rusia acordaron reducir su producción de petróleo crudo como parte de un acuerdo OPEP +, pero en los Estados Unidos, la reducción de la producción fue en gran parte el resultado de una caída inducida por los precios en las inversiones petroleras ajustadas y, en menor medida, cortes no planificados.

La producción de petróleo incluye varios tipos de combustibles líquidos, incluido el petróleo crudo y el condensado, los líquidos de las plantas de gas natural (NGPL) y el betún.

La producción de petróleo de EE.UU. disminuyó de 31,8 quads en 2019 a 30,4 quads en 2020. El petróleo crudo y el condensado representaron la mayor parte de la disminución, con 1,9 quads. En contraste, la producción de NGPL en 2020 creció en 0.4 quads, impulsada por un aumento en el consumo interno y en las exportaciones de etano.

Las disminuciones en la demanda impulsadas por la Covid-19 afectaron mucho menos la producción de gas natural. En Rusia, la producción de gas natural cayó en respuesta a temperaturas más suaves de lo normal durante el invierno 2020-2021 y al aumento de la generación de electricidad renovable en la UE. La producción de gas natural en Rusia cayó 2,1 quads, casi igual a su caída de 2,3 quads en la producción de petróleo.
