28 de diciembre de 2022.   Las baterías eléctricas y las células de combustible tienden a poseer el protagonismo en la transición hacia los automóviles y demás vehículos del transporte por tierra que ya no emitan sustancias contaminantes a la atmósfera.

Además, el uso del hidrógeno en el campo del transporte limpio y sostenible se ha venido limitando a células de combustible. Sin embargo, es factible emplear motores de combustión interna que no contaminen. La clave es usar el hidrógeno.

De hecho, un motor de hidrógeno podría resultar mucho más potente y capaz de acelerar más rápidamente y alcanzar velocidades mayores que el motor tradicional de gasolina o diésel.

Hasta ahora, este uso más ambicioso del hidrógeno ha estado limitado por dificultades técnicas. Un motor de combustión interna de hidrógeno es un reto bastante más difícil y ambicioso que el de desarrollar células de combustible de hidrógeno aptas para su uso generalizado y comercialmente viable en automóviles y otros vehículos del transporte por tierra.

En el Instituto de Investigación del Sudoeste (SwRI) de Estados Unidos lo tienen claro. Y han comenzado a trabajar en un proyecto que tiene por objetivo acondicionar un camión de tipo tráiler para que utilice un motor de combustión interna de hidrógeno en vez del original.

La nueva iniciativa permitirá poner a prueba la validez de las tecnologías empleadas y demostrar hasta qué punto un motor de combustión interna de hidrógeno puede contribuir a la descarbonización del sistema energético de nuestra civilización y a alcanzar la meta de reducir hasta cero o hasta casi cero las emisiones de gases con efecto invernadero y las de otros agentes contaminantes, tal como argumenta Terry Alger, del SwRI y uno de los responsables del proyecto.

El tráiler albergará a bordo instrumental para medición de emisiones, a fin de demostrar que un camión con motor de combustión interna de hidrógeno es capaz del mismo rendimiento logrado por uno con motor tradicional, y que además reduce hasta cero o casi cero sus emisiones de dióxido de carbono (CO2), óxidos de nitrógeno (NOx) y material particulado.

Se estima que el tráiler estará listo para diciembre de 2023 y que las demostraciones comenzarán en 2024
