En Colombia la comercialización del gas natural tomó fuerza e independencia a partir de 2013. A continuación algunos aspectos fundamentales sobre la misma.

2 de marzo de 2022. Iniciemos mencionando que un comercializador de GLP puede ser a la vez comercializador de gas natural. Veamos doce puntos sobre la comercialización.
Primero: El año del gas inicia el 1 de diciembre y termina el 30 de noviembre. Esto a la vez define la fecha en los contratos de comercialización de gas.
Segundo: La comercialización puede ser desarrollada a través de varios esquemas, entre los que se destaca la comercialización entre participantes en el mercado mayorista. Otro esquema es la comercialización con destino a la demanda final, la cual se desarrolla en el mercado secundario o minorista. La comercialización a la demanda final puede ser desarrollada por un comercializador que tenga asociada la actividad de distribución de gas o un comercializador independiente.
Tercero: Por regla general, la comercialización de gas no se puede realizar en cualquier momento del año, debe cumplir un cronograma.
Cuarto: Para realizar transacciones de gas el interesado debe estar registrado ante el Gestor del Mercado de Gas.
Quinto: Cada vez que se celebra un contrato de suministro de gas este debe ser registrado, de lo contrario el contrato no tiene validez para la regulación del mercado gasífero en Colombia.
Sexto: La comercialización puede ser con gas local o con gas natural importado, pero el comercializador de gas local es diferente al comercializador de gas natural importado.
Séptimo: Algunos contratos de comercialización de gas deben contar con respaldo físico. Lo cual implica que el productor debe contar con producción y el transportador con disponibilidad de capacidad de transporte.
Octavo: Si la comercialización de gas se realiza con destino a usuarios regulados se debe solicitar a la CREG aprobación de cargos para la comercialización o acogerse al cargo que esté aprobado para el mercado en el cual se desea prestar ese servicio.
Noveno: La transformación del gas, bien a través de la compresión o la licuefacción, no cambia las disposiciones regulatorias para la comercialización. Quizá impacta la dinámica de precios, pero no las disposiciones regulatorias de la comercialización.
Décimo: Para desarrollar la comercialización no se requiere aprobación previa por parte de las instituciones del mercado. Situación diferente es que se debe surtir unos avisos y adelantar un registro.
Undécimo: El comercializador de gas debe respaldar sus transacciones a través de prepago o carta de crédito stand by.
Duodécimo: La comercialización de gas tiene un reglamento y no es el que está consagrado en las resoluciones CREG 185 y 186 de 2020.
