Canacol construirá más plantas de licuefacción en Colombia

A partir de la primera experiencia de licuefacción de gas natural en Colombia, la firma canadiense Canacol Energy instalará más plantas en compañía de Galileo, como proveedor de la tecnología.  

3 de septiembre de 2019.   Canacol Energy inició la producción y venta de gas natural licuado (GNL) de su recién inaugurada planta de Jobo, en el departamento de Córdoba, la primera operación de este tipo en Colombia.

La empresa también anunció que se encuentra en negociaciones con la argentina Galileo Technologies para formar un joint venture, el cual instalará terminales en otras ubicaciones en Colombia y suministrará soluciones para el usuario final con el objetivo de reemplazar el diésel, la gasolina, el propano, el gas natural comprimido (GNC) y otros combustibles con GNL, una solución que combina menores costos con menores emisiones de contaminantes.

“Dada la capacidad limitada de la infraestructura de gasoductos en Colombia, los usuarios de energía industriales, comerciales y residenciales que no están ubicados a lo largo de las rutas de gasoductos existentes, actualmente consumen propano y gas natural comprimido, que se transporta a grandes distancias a través de camiones como fuente de energía. El GNL puede reemplazar el diésel, la gasolina, el propano, el GNC y otros combustibles, a una reducción de precio considerable dado el bajo costo del gas natural y el volumen relativamente grande de GNL que puede transportarse en camión. Con nuestros socios del joint venture, Galileo, proporcionando la tecnología, nuestro objetivo es construir otras terminales de licuefacción en otros lugares estratégicos de Colombia”, dijo Charle Gamba, presidente y CEO de Canacol.

En 2019, la empresa instaló cuatro módulos de licuefacción de gas natural comprados a Galileo en su planta principal de procesamiento de gas ubicada en Jobo. Los módulos son capaces de convertir 2,4 millones de pies cúbicos por día (Mpcd) de gas en 29.000 galones de GNL. Este GNL está siendo vendido en las instalaciones a un tercero, para distribución a sus clientes a través de camiones en Antioquia y Santander, a distancias de hasta 800 kilómetros.

Unos 65 Mpcd de GNC y 80 Mpcd de propano son consumidos actualmente en Colombia, con una cantidad importante del propano siendo importada de Estados Unidos. El objetivo del joint venture con Galileo es instalar terminales en otros lugares de Colombia, cerca de los gasoductos donde Canacol puede enviar físicamente o cambiar (“swap”) su gas para ser licuado, con el objetivo de reemplazar otros combustibles con GNL a un menor costo y con menores emisiones.
