Claves del Consejo Mundial de Energía para humanizar la energía

‘Energía para la Humanidad’ será el lema del Congreso Mundial de la Energía en 2022.

10 de noviembre de 2021.   Al hacer un balance sobre la Cumbre Climática COP26 en Glasgow, el Consejo Mundial de Energía (WEC), a través de su secretaria General, Ángela Wilkinson, calificó como prioritario un enfoque desde la humanización por encima de la preocupación por las finanzas energéticas en la Cumbre Climática que se desarrolló la semana anterior.

“El ‘Día de las Finanzas’ en la COP26 fue a la vez emocionante, pero a la vez de profunda reflexión, puesto que están en juego billones de dólares y miles de millones de vidas. No se puede dar sentido a todos los ceros sin una comprensión y un contexto compartidos”, expresó Wilkinson.

Por ejemplo, “existe la promesa de 100.000 millones de dólares de fondos para las transiciones energéticas de las economías en desarrollo, que aún no se ha cumplido”, manifestó la líder mundial del WEC.

“Es por eso que defendemos una visión humanizadora de la energía y promovemos acciones de liderazgo prácticas y sistémicas que implican a todos los niveles de la sociedad. De ahí que nuestro 25º Congreso Mundial de la Energía que se realizará en 2022 en San Petesburgo (Rusia) lo hemos titulado ‘Energía para la Humanidad’. Hay que pasar de contar a hacer un nuevo futuro energético para miles de millones de vidas mejores y un planeta sano”, dijo Wilkinson. 

Cinco aspectos clave

El WEC es la primera, permanente y única comunidad energética mundial verdaderamente abierta a todos, imparcial y neutral con 100 años actuando como voz del sentido común global. Con motivo de la Cumbre Climática dejó para la reflexión cinco aspectos clave:

Primero. La energía es un sistema: detrás de cada botón, interruptor y bomba de combustible hay un sinfín de conexiones. 

Segundo. La transición energética es un proceso, no un destino, y no puede llevarse a cabo de una sola vez.

Tercero. La diversidad de los sistemas energéticos está aumentando en el sentido más amplio: geografías, tecnologías, habilidades y culturas. 

Cuarto. El futuro de la energía no puede predecirse, pero sí pueden crearse futuros energéticos mejores, si evitamos el miedo al futuro y nos abrimos a múltiples vías y a nuevos y diferentes usos y usuarios de la energía. 

Quinto: La transición de la tecnología energética siempre conlleva la alteración y la transformación de la sociedad. 

Estos puntos son tan ciertos ahora como cuando el Consejo Mundial de la Energía se puso en marcha a principios de los años veinte.   Las ideas se basan en la experiencia acumulada en tres épocas diferentes de transición energética mundial: Energía para la paz, Energía para la prosperidad, y Energía para la gente y el planeta, concluye el pronunciamiento.

Datos y metas climáticos y energéticos

De las deliberaciones y posiciones de las grandes potencias participantes en la Cumbre Climático COP26, se destacan:

Europa

  • La Unión Europea se ha fijado la meta de reducir sus emisiones en un 55 % en 2030 respecto a 1990. Europa actualmente está diseñando la legislación para cumplir ese objetivo.
  • El Reino Unido (ya no forma parte de la UE), país anfitrión de la COP26, aspira a alcanzar las “emisiones cero” en 2050, con una senda de reducción del 68 % para 2030 y del 76 % para 2035, así como descarbonizar el sistema eléctrico para 2035.

Estados Unidos y Canadá

El gobierno de Joe Biden quiere recortar las emisiones contaminantes hasta en un 53 % en 2030, respecto a 2005; llegar a “cero emisiones” a mitad de siglo,y ha anunciado grandes inversiones para desarrollar sectores industriales sostenibles como la energía solar o el vehículo eléctrico.

Países BRICS

China

  • Primer emisor de CO2 del mundo desde 2006.
  • Pekín ha elevado sus objetivos desde el Acuerdo de París y espera alcanzar la neutralidad de carbono en 2060, pese a que cuenta con marcar su pico de emisiones antes de 2030. 
  • Anuncian que dejarán de invertir en plantas de carbón en el extranjero, gesto que se ha interpretado como una señal por los mercados internacionales.

Brasil 

  • Compromiso de acabar con la deforestación para 2030 y desprenderse del CO2 en 2050.

Rusia

  • Es el cuatro emisor de CO2 del mundo y gran productor de combustibles fósiles.
  • Invertirá entre un 1,5% y un 2% de su PIB en reducir en 80% sus emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero hasta 2050 en comparación con los niveles de 1990.
  • Pretende alcanzar las cero emisiones en 2060.

Sudáfrica

  • Espera limitar sus emisiones de efecto invernadero a 510 millones de toneladas métricas en 2025 y a menos de 420 millones en 2030, frente a los 471,6 millones de toneladas registradas en 2019.

Potencias del Pacífico

Japón

  • Quinto emisor mundial de CO2.
  • Se propone reducir sus emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero en un 46 % para 2030.

Corea del Sur

  • Aspira a la neutralidad climática en 2050.

Nueva Zelanda

  • Reducirá sus emisiones un 50 % en 2030.

Australia

  • Ha fijado el 2050 como horizonte para descarbonizar la economía del país, que produce gas y carbón.
